In today’s interview, we sit down with Summer, the founder of Lansway Jewelry, to discuss her inspiring journey from a challenging childhood in Quzhou, China, to becoming a successful entrepreneur and a trusted partner for designers worldwide. Her story is one of resilience, collaboration, and unwavering dedication to her craft and her partners, including her long-time collaborator, French designer Delphine. Join us as we explore her experiences, motivations, and insights into building a jewelry brand with heart.
Interviewer: Summer, thank you for joining us today. Could you start by sharing a little about your background and the path that led you to founding Lansway Jewelry?
Summer: Thank you for having me! My story begins in Quzhou City, Zhejiang Province, where I grew up. My family faced many challenges, especially since my mother struggled with a long-term illness. From a young age, I had to learn to be strong, responsible, and resourceful. I eventually graduated from university and started working as a buyer in Yiwu, a city known for its massive trade market. This job taught me a lot about the industry and introduced me to people from all over the world, sparking my interest in global business.
Interviewer: That must have been quite a learning experience! Could you tell us more about how you transitioned from working as a buyer to creating your own jewelry company?
Summer: Working in Yiwu was an eye-opener. I was exposed to countless products and learned how different markets operated. One day, I met Delphine, a French designer who was new to the world of handmade jewelry and looking for someone to help bring her ideas to life on a larger scale. We hit it off immediately; she had the vision, and I had the resources and connections. Our partnership allowed me to see a path forward in the jewelry industry, which led to the founding of Lansway Jewelry. We’ve now worked together for 15 years!
Interviewer: That sounds like a special partnership. What has it been like working with Delphine for so long, especially considering your cultural and geographical differences?
Summer: Delphine and I come from very different backgrounds, but I think that’s what makes our collaboration so rich. She brings a French, artistic perspective, while I bring my understanding of production and market needs. It’s a perfect balance. Working together for 15 years has taught us to communicate openly, respect each other’s expertise, and find common ground even when we have different opinions. We’ve become like family.
Interviewer: It’s inspiring to hear about such a lasting partnership. What are some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting Lansway Jewelry?
Summer: Starting Lansway was both exciting and challenging. There were so many aspects to consider: sourcing quality materials, managing production, and keeping up with trends. But the most difficult part was establishing trust with international clients. Building a reputation for quality and reliability took time and consistency. And because I come from a small city in China, there was a perception that I had to work extra hard to prove myself on the global stage.
Interviewer: How did you overcome those challenges and build that trust with clients around the world?
Summer: I made it a priority to be transparent and communicative with my clients. I always ensured that they understood each step of the production process and felt confident in our ability to meet their expectations. I also focused on building strong relationships with my clients by listening to their needs, delivering high-quality products, and going above and beyond to meet their timelines. That dedication has paid off; now, we have a loyal client base who trusts our work.
Interviewer: It sounds like your dedication to quality and relationships really made a difference. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs who want to build a business with international partners?
Summer: My biggest advice is to focus on trust and mutual respect. Cultural and language differences can make communication challenging, but if both parties are committed to understanding each other, it’s possible to build a strong partnership. And don’t be afraid to go the extra mile to show your clients or partners that you value them. Small gestures of thoughtfulness, like remembering a client’s preference or providing updates without them having to ask, can strengthen the relationship and set you apart.
Interviewer: How has your background and the experiences you faced growing up influenced your approach to business?
Summer: Growing up with a mother who was often ill taught me resilience and empathy. I know what it’s like to face difficult situations, so I’m always motivated to do my best, even when challenges arise. I also feel a strong sense of gratitude for my clients and partners because they’ve supported me and believed in my vision. I put that gratitude into every part of my work at Lansway, striving to create jewelry that reflects our shared values of quality, beauty, and authenticity.
Interviewer: Lastly, what are your hopes for the future of Lansway Jewelry?
Summer: My hope is to continue growing Lansway as a brand that connects different cultures through beauty and craftsmanship. I want to expand our collections and introduce more sustainable practices so that we can contribute positively to the industry. Most importantly, I want to keep building relationships that span borders, just like the one I have with Delphine, and to continue inspiring others who may have faced difficult beginnings.
Interviewer: Thank you, Summer, for sharing your journey with us. Your story is truly inspiring, and we look forward to seeing how Lansway Jewelry continues to grow.
Summer: Thank you! I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my story, and I hope it encourages others on their own journeys.
